Fixed Wireless Access (FWA)

Fixed wireless access (FWA) is a type of 5G or 4G LTE wireless technology that enables fixed broadband access using radio frequencies instead of cables. While FWA’s technology and uses are constantly evolving, its primary use is to connect homes and businesses to the internet.

What is FWA technology?

Fixed wireless access is a type of technology that uses radio waves to send high-speed signals that offer data transfer to and from consumer and enterprise devices.

How does FWA technology work?

FWA systems typically consist of a base station connected to a fixed network and a number of subscriber units spread over a wide area. The base station then uses radio waves to communicate with the subscriber units, allowing the end-user to connect to the fixed network and access high-speed data services.

Complementary technology

Rather than FWA working in competition with pre-existing technologies, such as wired broadband, mobile wireless, and satellite, it complements them. Fixed wired internet infrastructure (DSL and cable) experienced a heavy network strain due to the pandemic. This has encouraged network providers to expand infrastructure to minimize the strain on the network.

The Benefits

5G Technology

High-speed internet coupled with easy deployment creates a seamless process for customers. Carriers’ recent high frequency spectrum acquisitions allow for wireless speeds that are comparable to fiber in most use cases.

Flexible Installation

Unlike other technologies, FWA can be installed quickly and easily without needing trenches or other disruptive construction. Decreased deployment time for both consumers and enterprises versus wireline.

no fiber infrastructure

FWA does not require a physical wired connection, providing customers in areas with mobile coverage but without last-mile wired connections to gain high-speed broadband access.
